Registration Opens for MMB’s Free Summer Music Program for Students in Grades 6 Through 12
2nd May 2017 Registration Opens for MMB’s Free Summer Music Program for Students in Grades 6 Through 12
MELBOURNE, Florida, April 26, 2017 – The Melbourne Municipal Band (MMB) is holding its annual Summer Youth Band (SYB) Music Program from June 19 through July 13, 2017. Registration closes June 2. This is the 10th anniversary of the program, which has grown to include nearly 100 students last year.

The free music instruction is open to all students enrolled in 6th through 12th grade who are interested in learning to play a musical instrument, or who already play a wind or percussion instrument. One month’s instrument rental fee and the cost of the lesson book are included for beginning students. Parents or guardians are responsible for the rental after the first month.

The program will run Monday through Thursday, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Church on the Rock, 4028 Babcock St., Melbourne (across the street from Palm Bay High School). Each student will receive a 50-minute group lesson with a qualified teacher and also will have playing time as part of a band. This year, there will be a jazz improvisation class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to Noon.

Students will present a concert to parents and the public on the final day of the program, July 13, at 6:00 p.m., at the Melbourne Civic Auditorium. The auditorium will be set up with long tables so the audience can bring a box dinner to enjoy during or prior to the concert. Drinks will be available at a nominal cost, with proceeds going to the Summer Youth Band.

``The MMB is very excited to be able to offer this program to our area’s youth for the 10th year,” said Art Martin, MMB musician and Executive Administrator, and coordinator of the SYB Program. “When young people learn to play an instrument, it`s an activity that they can enjoy their entire life and that can enrich their life forever.``

The MMB is reaching out to local companies and organizations to assist with financial support for the initiative.

``As the program`s popularity increases and the number of students continues to grow, so do our costs for things such as instrument rentals, music, lesson books, T-shirts and the auditorium rental costs for the concert. We are asking the community for donations to help offset the impact of those increases,`` said Martin. Tax-deductible donations can be made out to “SUMMER YOUTH BAND” and mailed to Melbourne Municipal Band, PO Box 3105, Melbourne, FL 32902. Those who donate to benefit the SYB will be recognized in the printed Summer Youth Band concert program in July.

Additional information and registration forms for the summer program are available by contacting Mr. Martin by phone at 321-724-0555 or 908-619-2143, or via email at Parents and students also can visit the band’s web site at and click on the program flyer on the home page to access additional information and an online registration form. Registration closes June 2.
